Responsible gaming: the tools, the warning signs and where to get help
Gambling is a form of entertainment with a cost attached, and for a minority of people it becomes something else. This page covers the controls every licensed platform offers, how to recognise a pattern early, and where support is available here.
If gambling has stopped being entertainment and started being a way to fix something, the tools below matter more than anything else on this site. Bangladesh has no dedicated gambling helpline. Kaan Pete Roi, the national emotional support helpline, answers on 09612119911 and is the closest local service; Gambling Therapy offers free online support internationally, including in Bengali.
The tools worth switching on
Deposit limits
A cap per day, week or month, enforced by the platform. Increases usually take effect only after a cooling-off delay, which is the point — the limit protects you from a decision made in the moment.
Session reminders
A periodic on-screen reminder of how long you have been playing. Sessions run longer than people estimate, consistently and by a wide margin.
Loss limits
A ceiling on net losses over a period. More useful than a deposit limit for anyone who redeposits winnings.
Cooling-off
A short block, typically 24 hours to 30 days, that lifts automatically. Use it at the moment you notice you are chasing, not afterwards.
Self-exclusion
A longer block, often six months or more, deliberately difficult to reverse. It should be difficult to reverse.
Account closure
Administrative, and not a protective tool — nothing stops a new account tomorrow. If the reason is control, choose self-exclusion instead.
Signs worth taking seriously
- Betting more than you decided to, more often than you decided to.
- Depositing again immediately after a loss to recover it.
- Borrowing money to play, or playing with money set aside for something else.
- Hiding how much you play from people close to you.
- Playing to change how you feel rather than for entertainment.
- Feeling irritable or restless when you cannot play.
None of these on its own is a diagnosis. Several of them together, over weeks, is a pattern worth acting on — and acting on it early is much easier than acting on it later.
Practical steps that work
- Set limits while you are calmLimits set before a session are set by a different person than the one who sets them mid-session. Do it at registration.
- Separate the moneyPlay only from an amount moved aside in advance. Money mixed with rent and groceries has no boundary.
- Stop chasing by making it slowChasing depends on speed. A cooling-off period of 24 hours breaks the loop more reliably than a decision to stop does.
- Tell one personConcealment is what allows the pattern to grow. A single person who knows the real numbers changes the dynamic.
- Ask for help before it is urgentSupport services are used most often at the point of crisis and are most effective well before it.
Under 18
Online gambling is for adults only, and every licensed operator is required to verify age before paying out. If you share a device with a child, use the device's own parental controls and consider filtering software; blocking tools such as Gamban and BetBlocker exist for exactly this purpose and can also be used by adults who want the option removed from their own devices.
